About Adrian
Adrian Bates is a ceramic artist based in Stroud. His background is in graphic design and teaching. After a successful career in graphics, that spanned over two decades, he decided to explore crafts: woodwork, silversmithing, copper beating, and finally ceramics. He developed stunning sculptures, which push the boundaries of the material. They are close to the edge, masterfully defying gravity and stress of firings.
Adrian’s work is recognisable by a combination of thrown and slab-built elements. He uses minimum decoration, allowing the forms to remain simple and shine without distraction. There is a subtle surface texture on the outside and burnished edges, to soften & emphasise the form.
Adrian’s monumental pieces, on display in beautiful garden settings, can stand at 1.25 meters. This is a testament to exquisite skill, craftmanship and attention to detail. The work has always been about form and line, negative and positive space Adrian’s ability to eliminate visible joints has been a significant challenge, but he believes it’s important with such striking geometrical designs.
